Rajasthan Central University Scholar hanged self over alleged harassment from faculty

A suicide row is not stopping anywhere in the Central Universities’ campuses. The 27 year old PhD scholar of Mathematics Department of Central University of Rajasthan, Mohit Chauhan committed suicide yesterday evening in his hostel room.

IG (Ajmer) Malini Agrawal informed that on 5th February 2016, he was talking to his friends in the hostel and nobody could understand what happened but he left them abruptly and went to his room. His friends informed that they started calling him for dinner but he did not answer. Then some of them went to his room and found him hanging. Students rushed him to the hospital but he was declared brought dead.

Less than a month ago, Rohit Vemula, another scholar from Central University of Hyderabad also took his life and the scenario seems, not at all, changing for Central Universities. There is already a nationwide protest going on for this.

This is not all, but from Rajasthan Central University only, one Dalit PhD scholar from Social Work Department, Umesh Kumar Jonwal, a Junior Research Fellow, registered a case in January 2016 against the University for harassment after getting expelled. Regarding Mohit’s death, he said “Mohit was depressed for the past few days and used to tell us that his guide was harassing him. He asked me to help him on the issue just last week.”

After hearing the news, the Vice-Chancellor, A K Pujari rushed to the hospital and said “This is a very sad incident. I am gathering information about it.” In the case of Umesh Jonwal, a local court has ordered to register a case against the VC, A K Pujari including six other faculties Jagdish Jadhav, J P Singh, A K Gupta, R K Pardarsani, S N Ambedkar and Atiq Ahmed.

Some students showed their tension that they come to the institution to learn from their teachers but in fact, some are being harassed on one or other reason.

Even last year, an under graduate student, Vimal Choudhary committed suicide in the University campus.
